Upskilling the Australian Ag Workforce

The pandemic has led to widespread unemployment across the world, but in Australia the agriculture industry is moving full steam ahead - major employer Nutrien Ag Solutions filling on average 30 positions a month.

Nutrien Ag Solutions Managing Director Rob Clayton said in the past twelve months they had hired more than 300 permanent new employees and now have a team of 4,000 people across the country.

"A highly skilled Australian agricultural workforce helps ensure the industry remains viable, advanced and valued by the wider community," Mr Clayton said.

"The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on the availability of seasonal workers this year and the industry was forced to adapt.

"Even before COVID-19 there have always been difficulties in attracting highly qualified people...into agriculture."

He said it was absolutely the time to consider a career in agriculture, and they were currently recruiting agronomists as part of their Agronomy Graduate Program, which is kicking off in 2021.

"We believe upskilling the Australian agricultural workforce will ensure the industry is well positioned to be world-leading and grow into the future."
